Placidus, a hunter of the Emperor Trajan (98 - 117), is shown hunting a stag,carrying a radiant crucifix between its antlers. Placidus falls off his horse. He hears the voice of of Christ: "Why are you persecuting me?... I am Christ, who created heaven created the heavens and the earth, I let the light arise and divide the darkness.

After repeated apparitions, including to his wife, he and his family were baptized and given the name Eustachius.

A painted copy after the famous and popular engraving by Albrecht Dürer's famous and popular engraving has already been mentioned in Joseph Heller: DasLeben und die Werke Albrecht Dürer's, Bamberg 1827, pp. 859-860; the owner at the time was given as : C. Werlich in Rudolstadt.
