On the hunt a stag appears to Placidus, a hunter of the Emperor Trajan (98 - 117), carrying between his antlers a crucifix in a halo. Placidus falls off his horse. He hears the voice of Christ "Why do you persecute me? ... I am Christus, who created heaven and earth, I let the light dawn and part the darkness." After the repeated appearance, also to his wife, Placidus lets himself and his family be baptized and with his baptism is given the name Eustachius. (Photographic reproduction of 1904)
