Great Pietà

Great Pietà side view from the left

Great Pietà

1485 1490

side view from the left

The Great Pietà is one of the most impressive sculptures to be found in Nuremberg's churches. Mary and John mourn for their executed son and friend Jesus.(...)

Its great quality lies in its many-facetedness.

From every side, new details and further gorges can be discovered, which drove the carvers into the work block. The Pietà was probably created in the workshop of Sixtus Frei of Nuremberg. However, it received its coloured version from Michael Wolgemut.

Location: Nuremberg, St. Jacob

Design: Frei (Frey), Sixtus

Realization: Frei (Frey), Sixtus, Wolgemut, Michael
