General view

Michael Wolgemut and/or workshop Retable by Andreas Harsdörffer and Ursula Behaim from the Dominican monastery church of St. Katharina, Nuremberg around 1485/98 Until the early 19th century, the reredos was placed in the northern aisle of the Dominican monastery church of St. Katharina in Nuremberg. There it stood on the Apostle or Twelve Messenger Altar on the first pillar of the northern aisle as seen from the east. On the outside of the movable wings it showed the apostles as standing figures: each in front of a wall and a blue background at the top left the apostles James the Elder. Ä. and Peter, below Bartholomew and Andrew, at the top right Paul and Johannes Evangelista, below Matthias and Thomas. On the only remaining inactive wing there are Philip and James the Elder at the top. J., Barnabas and Mark shown below. Scenes from the lives of the apostles are painted on the inside against a gold background. (...) The retable was donated by the Nuremberg patrician Andreas I. Harsdörffer († 1498) and his wife Ursula (1436–1503), the daughter of Michael II Behaim. The couple's coats of arms are located both outside and inside on the movable wings, each at the bottom edge of the picture. The date of the foundation of the retable is unknown, but Harsdörffer's death in 1498 probably provides a terminus ante quem. Some authors incorrectly attribute the reredos to Hans Traut from Speyer. However, the origin from Wolgemut's workshop can hardly be doubted for stylistic reasons.(...) Dagmar Hirschfelder (Michael Wolgemut / More than Dürer's teacher)
