The Milan Cathedral

The Milan Cathedral

The Milan Cathedral

ca. 1874

From autumn 1873 to spring 1874 Paul Ritter went on a study trip to Italy accompanied by his brother Lorenz. The reason for this undertaking was a commission from the Munich art dealer Friedrich Bruckmann, for whom Paul Ritter was to produce architectural pictures of Northern Italy. He visited numerous important cities such as Vicenza, Padua, Ferrara, Pavia, Monza, Modena, Ravenna and also Milan. After his return to Nuremberg, some of the many sketches he made were transformed into oil paintings for the Kunstanstalt Bruckmann, including the very detailed depiction of Milan Cathedral. In addition to the cultural-historical contribution he made with this view, he also succeeded in emphasising the atmospheric character of this location.
