Monument of Philipp Melanchthon

Monument of Philipp Melanchthon Monument

Monument of Philipp Melanchthon

from 1826

Monument

On the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the grammar school founded by Philipp Melanchthon (1497-1560) and named after him, Heideloff prepared designs for a life-size statue of the humanist theologian. Sculptor Daniel Burgschmiet completed the sandstone monument within three months. In May 1826, it was erected in front of the grammar school on the west side of Egidienplatz. (...) The statue is the first freestanding monument of the 19th century in Nuremberg. It may have been modeled on the Würzburg monument to Prince-Bishop Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn, erected in 1817 as the first monument to a historical figure in Franconia. Furthermore, connections can be drawn to the Wittenberg Luther Monument by Johann Gottfried Schadow, erected in 1821. Andrea Knop: Carl Alexander Heideloff and his Romantic Architectural Program, Nuremberg Works on Urban and Regional History, Volume 67, Nuremberg 2009

Location: Nuremberg, Egidienplatz

Design: Heideloff, Carl Alexander

Realization: Burgschmiet, Jakob Daniel

Material: Stone
