The cemetery St. Johannis in Nuremberg

The cemetery St. Johannis in Nuremberg

The cemetery St. Johannis in Nuremberg

around 1845

Drawn by Georg Christoph Wilder, engraved by Johann Gabriel Poppel.

In: Nuremberg Album, published by Georg Franz, Munich o.J., around 1850 , sheet 45

48 plates, with views divided into the sections castles, churches, fountains, bridges, squares and strange buildings, gates and towers, Danube-Main Canal and surroundings.

On the left of the picture is the seven meter high memorial stele erected in 1560 by Wolfgang Münzer (1524-1577). Münzer made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem in 1556, where he was knighted. On his way home, he was arrested on false charges and sentenced to life imprisonment as a rowing slave in the galleys of the Sultan of Constantinople. Faith helped him to survive this time. Out of gratitude, after his release after three years, he had this memorial stele erected in St. John's Cemetery. Further the engraving shows the stone cross from 1490 without the crucified, the crucifixion group by Adam Kraft, the east portal, the wooden shoe chapel as well as the city silhouette in the background.
