After attending Grammar School he started piano and composition studies at the Nuremberg academy of music and from 1928 on studied Musicology at the University Erlangen with Gustav Becking whom he followed to Prague. After obtaining his doctorate in 1831 he was recommended by Becking´s successor Rudolf Steglich in Erlangen and worked as an assistant at the Institute of Musicology of the University Erlangen. Together with his brother Robert he founded the chamber music ensemble „Collegium Musicum“ in 1931 as well as two other musical associations. After his military service during World War II Spilling was employed by “Bavarian Radio”( "Bayerischer Rundfunk”) as an expert for classical and folk music and appointed Chief of the Musical Department of the studio in Nuremberg. This was where he created several series which became famous, e.g. „Musica Antiqua“, „Ars Nova“ and „Musikalisches Tafelkonfekt“.
