In the centre of the lid is the stylised figure of Christ with raised arms, Christ as the risen Christ or the blessing Christ - perhaps an ambiguity intended by the artist. Framing the rim of the basin is a depiction reminiscent of the passage of the people of Israel through the Red Sea: a multitude of small figures stretching their arms upwards from the waters in search of help and freeing themselves from the chains of their Egyptian captivity.
The passage through the Red Sea is theologically regarded as a prefiguration of the baptism of Christ, an Old Testament promise that is fulfilled in the New Testament baptism.
Israel passes through the Red Sea into freedom - the believing Christian enters the new life through baptism.
