Stuccoed ceiling, long side
Stuccoed ceiling from the old city estate on Lorenz Square
“(…) This estate belonged to the Nuremberg patrician family of von Grundherr. In 1914 the von Grundherrs´ building complex war almost completely demolished and replaced by a new building. The baroque ceiling was newly established in the ground floor of this building. In the twenties of the last century the Sparkasse (savings bank) acquired this building. In World War II this building was evidently not completely destroyed. The baroque ceiling outlasted the war almost undamaged. The ceiling was then taken down in 1958, when the savings bank erected a new building at Lorenzer Platz. Unfortunately it must be said the ceiling was not taken down and stored with sufficient care and expertise. Some parts were broken up, and some parts were lost altogether.
When the savings bank built new quarters in Theatergasse it was nevertheless decided to restore this valuable and for Nuremberg especially interesting ceiling and to install it again. Some parts had to be reconstructed by the help of old photos.
These old photos show that there was a painting in the centre of the ceiling. This painting has been installed in the Small Hall of the Rathaus (City Hall) for decades now. (...)"
