Jesus spreads his hands in blessing over the Nuremberg Institution for the Deaf and Dumb

Jesus spreads his hands in blessing over the Nuremberg Institution for the Deaf and Dumb

Jesus spreads his hands in blessing over the Nuremberg Institution for the Deaf and Dumb

from 1906

The biblical story "The Healing of the Deaf-Mute" forms the basis of this painting. (.....) He (Jesus) blesses the school for the deaf, which is depicted in the background. A teacher is just returning from a walk with his students. It could be Paul Ritter himself, who has taken on the role of the teacher. Upon closer inspection, a castle can be seen in the background on the left. This is a reference to the city that gave rise to this school. (...)

The altarpiece, set within an altarpiece case, is flanked by two angels carved in relief from wood, who are turned towards the image in a prayerful pose. The altar is crowned by a reclining lamb. (Quoted from "Paul Ritter and the Cultural-Historical Cityscape of Nuremberg in the Late 19th Century" by Dr. Silke Colditz-Heusl)

Location: Nuremberg, Chapel of the Paul Ritter School, Pestalozzistrasse 25

Design: Ritter, Johann Paul d.Ä.

Realization: Ritter, Johann Paul d.Ä.
