Overall view

A winged altarpiece composed of originally unrelated parts by various, unnamed artists. The Madonna was created in Prague around 1360-65, the relief figures of the Apostles on the shrine wings after 1400. It originated in the Carthusian monastery in Nuremberg.

Lit.: Emperor Charles IV 1316-2016, Exhibition Catalogue Nuremberg and Prague 2016, Cat. No. 11.13 (author Markus Hörsch) Imports of artworks from Prague are also documented in Nuremberg from other sources.

For example, Conrad Mendel, brother of Marquard Mendel, the founder of the Carthusian monastery, acquired a Pietà in Prague for the Chapel of the Twelve Apostles, which cost 5 florins, for the chapel built for the Twelve Brothers Foundation.
