Kaufhof At the Mauthalle and Königstraße, facade alignment and St. Lorenz Church

Kaufhof

At the Mauthalle and Königstraße, facade alignment and St. Lorenz Church

The department store, situated on a large trapezoidal plot, replaced a post-war building erected in 1950 by Franz Reichel between 1960 and 1962. This building, highly controversial, led to the formation of the Old Town Preservation Society. The new building, designed by Herbert Lochmann from Munich, represents a significant improvement over the previous structure. However, the site was not only occupied by war ruins, but also by two historicist houses dating from the period when parts of the Lorenzer district were transformed into the "city center" at the expense of medieval buildings. Both were demolished.

The current architecture lacks elegance, particularly in its use of local materials and forms. Fortunately, the building is partially obscured by the Mauthalle (toll hall) when approaching the Old Town from the train station. Its respectful height, however, should also be acknowledged in relation to the surrounding buildings.
