The archaic depiction of St. Anne with the Virgin and Child, in which the mother of Mary, following the traditional Hodegetria type of Madonna image, presents the Christ Child on her left arm and the small, childlike figure of the Virgin Mary balanced on her right arm, was repeatedly depicted in Nuremberg art during the Dürer period, particularly in stained glass, in a wide variety of formats, remaining virtually unchanged.

A closely related counterpart to the depiction of Helena, who plays a central role as the mother of Emperor Constantine in the legend of the Finding of the True Cross, can be found in a slightly earlier panel painting of St. Helena by a master in Dürer's tradition, created around 1515/20 (Karlsruhe, Kunsthalle, Inv. No. 97d). The coat of arms of Imhoff and Haller/Nützel is displayed in the corners. ...
