Portrait of Michael Wolgemut

Portrait of Michael Wolgemut

Portrait of Michael Wolgemut

1516

Museum information panel, Art Collection of Veste Coburg: role model and teacher to Albrecht Dürer 1471–1528. Michael Wolgemut, 1516 Oil/parchment (glued to a wooden support), M. 447 Acquired in 2003 as a gift from the Schäfer family, Schweinfurt

This portrait is likely a post-Dürer replication of the Wolgemut portrait from the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg. Michael Wolgemut (Nuremberg 1434–1519 Nuremberg) was a painter, draftsman for woodcuts, and wood engraver. Albrecht Dürer began his apprenticeship with him in 1484. This touching portrait of his later years expresses the pupil's special appreciation for his former master.

Location: Art Collections of Veste Coburg

Design: Dürer, Albrecht

Realization: Dürer, Rezeption

Depicted: Wolgemut, Michael

Material: Oil/parchment (glued to wooden support) Acrylic, gold leaf, 31 x 20 cm
