Ludwig Emil Grimm reports on the ceremony in his memoirs: At half past five we were already on our way to St. John's Cemetery. It was cloudy and cold and a little snow was falling. Many artists walked out and we met a lot of people. At six o'clock everyone was gathered around Dürer's grave and the many artists from the most diverse parts of Germany were suddenly standing there in beautiful groups at this grave. A large ivy wreath lay on it and a solemn silence had set in. Then the mighty sounds of the trumpets began and their sublime and moving tones echoed all around and announced the great solemnity of the hour and the day! The storm died down, the clouds parted and the sun stood in all its splendor over the castle, illuminating the beautiful churchyard and the solemnly large group. We wished that all our distant friends could enjoy the beautiful moment with us. The song: "The world around us still rests in slumber, in town and country and forest and field" etc. was by the painter Förster [Ernst Förster, 1800-1885].
