As a Christian officer in the bodyguard of the Roman Emperor Diocletian, Saint Sebastian lived in Rome around 300 AD and suffered martyrdom for his faith, as evidenced by the bundle of arrows in his hand. Hans Süss von Kulmbach was one of Dürer's most gifted pupils and collaborators in Nuremberg, where he is documented as living from 1501 onwards.
