"To commemorate the stay of the philosopher Ludwig Feuerbach in Nuremberg from 1860 to 1872, the magistrate unveiled a memorial plaque on his 100th birthday on July 28, 1904 at the house where he died at the foot of therechnerberg (near today's house at Sulzbacher Straße 51). was demolished in 1916. In 1930, a monument financed by private donations and inscribed with the Feuerbach quotes "Man created God in his image" and "Do good for the sake of man" was inaugurated on therechnerberg and taken over by the city into ownership and care . After the Nazis came to power in 1933, the monument was destroyed. In 1955, with the votes of the SPD against the CSU and FDP and against the fierce resistance of both churches, the city council decided to re-erect it in the same place with the same inscription using original fragments that had recently been found. The re-erecting solved the problem There was a heated controversy among the population, including attacks on the monument, which had to be temporarily placed under police protection. The memorial plaque from 1904 was placed near the monument on April 11, 1999."
