Sebaldus Altarpiece

Sebaldus Altarpiece Overall view

Sebaldus Altarpiece

1508

Overall view

The altarpiece was commissioned by the merchant and art patron Sebald Schreyer (1446–1520) and his wife Margarethe Kammermeister, who came from Schwäbisch Gmünd. It was created in 1508 and installed in the chapel in the Minster, which the couple had built. The winged altarpiece features a shrine and tracery with carvings by an unknown master (perhaps from the circle of Veit Stoss?), as well as painted wings and a predella. The latter were executed by three painters from Dürer's workshop. Two created the legend scene, and a third painted the predella with the Fourteen Holy Helpers. It is a purely Nuremberg-made piece.

Location: Schwäbisch Gmünd, Holy Cross Minster

Realization: Werkstatt, Dürer
