Putto with lute
"Three altars were commissioned for St. Clare's Church in Nuremberg in 1919. Among them were some delightful, charming cherubs, a large, richly detailed Stigmatization of St. Francis, two angular, austere reliefs of St. Augustine and Thomas Aquinas, and above all, the beautiful statue of St. Clare." (Georg Lill, Max Heilmaier, a German Sculptor, Munich, 1922). ...
“Two charming wooden figures (60 cm high) of a winged angel playing the lute and bagpipes are intended for the high altar of St. Clare’s Church in Nuremberg. The city of Peter Vischer and St. Sebaldus’s tomb, with its vibrant putti figures of early German art, may well have influenced Heilmaier; in any case, this influence would have been freely incorporated, and a piece of his naive and child-loving soul would have been placed in these angels, who are so completely absorbed in their play. The short skirts, like the bagpiper’s beret, suit them perfectly with their heraldically stylized wings.”
