The Human Sun Dial

The Human Sun Dial

The Human Sun Dial

around 1534

"Although the man is not depicted completely naked, the exhibitionist "birthing position" is emphasised all the more clearly by the hands on the thighs and the placing of the feet, not to mention the defecating anus "delivering" faeces, which serves as the lower fixed point of the pointer rod. The "whimsical figure", as the text underneath reveals, is to be used as an ever-functioning measuring device and legitimises itself through its character as a symbol of an idle and pleasure-oriented lifestyle. Otherwise, such a presentation of the genital and faecal sphere has a firm place in the world of playing cards as well as in carnival. The peasants on the green 4 and 8 in Flötner's deck show this very well.

A look at contemporary literature makes it clear that the motif of the "A.ansicht" seems almost harmless compared to the crude peasant satires, where a veritable poetry contest developed around urination and defecation. The "Fäkalgedichte" of Hans Sachs, for example, capture defecation in almost a dozen different images."

Location: Nuremberg, City Library, Nor.K.1000 (20.21.39) Einblatt-Holzschnitte / 2° / in Geisberg, Max: der dt. Einblatt-Holzschnitt in d. 1. Hälfte d. 16. Jhs. vol. 20.21.39
