Butcher´s Fountain

Butcher´s Fountain Overall view

Butcher´s Fountain

Overall view

Wall fountain with a rectangular trough, crowned by an obelisk and designed in the style of the late Renaissance as a fleshy relief work with volutes, garlands and a central cartouche with a fully plastic sheep's head - close to the so-called "cartilage style". The execution of the ornamentation seems to suggest knowledge of the Architectvra book by Wendel Dietterlin, which was printed in Nuremberg in 1598:

(see also: ARCHITECTURA by Wendel Dietterlin) Architectvra.

Of the division, symmetry and proportion of the five columns, and all the art work that follows, of windows, chimneys, doorways, portals, fountains and epitaphs. (…) Printed in Nuremberg and published Hubrecht and Balthasar Caymox (See also: Balthasar Caymox) 1598

In 1887 Georg Leistner made a copy

Location: Nuremberg, Hauptmarkt 1 (copy), original in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum

Design: Werner, Hans

Realization: Werner, Hans, Leistner, Georg
