Epitaph Oertel

Epitaph Oertel

Epitaph Oertel

from 1514 to 1574

Painted epitaph for Sigmund Oertel (d. July 21, 1525)

Death inscription below:

In the year 1525, on the 21st of July,
the honorable
Sigmund Oertel died.
Verneutt An(no) 74

_______________

Founder: Sigmund Oertel (d. July 21, 1525)
Wife: Margarethe Oertel, née Groß (d. 1512) _______________

Epitaph for Margarethe Oertel:

"As we know from her husband's records, it was created only two years after her death. He initially had a depiction of the Rosary placed on it, similar to the Hayd epitaph in St. Lorenz. (...)

The panel was completely painted over in the post-Reformation period (1574). Only in infrared light are the rose blossoms and the halos of the saints still visible." Rosary, which lie beneath the current layer of paint. The new painting replaced the unpopular, explicitly Old Believer theme and also an indulgence image with the Baptism of Christ, a scene unproblematic even from a Protestant perspective. This can be explained by the fact that the epitaph was hung in the south aisle near the tower portal, in front of which Margarethe Oertel was buried.
