Education: From 1837, he studied at the Royal Academy Schools.
Award: In 1839, he was awarded the Academy’s prestigious silver medal.
Apprenticeship: He served an apprenticeship with Joseph T. Parkinson.
Early career: He later worked in the practice of the architect Sir William Tite.
Study tours: He travelled throughout Europe with the architects Ewan Christian and Sir Horace Jones.
Professor of Architecture at University College London (1865–1881) and Chairman of the Palestine Exploration Fund (see there).
