Son of Friedrich, a district and municipal court clerk; father of Edmund. Married: I) May 24, 1829, to Clementina Johanna Wilhelmina (born in Augsburg c. 1804), daughter of Friedrich Hermann, a First Lieutenant; II) October 8, 1855, to Luise Susanna Babette, widow of a private gentleman. 1821–27: Trainee at the art school and student of Albert Chr. Reindel. 1827/28: Advanced training in Paris. During the 1830s and early 1840s, he gained particular prominence in Nuremberg through the exhibition of his steel engravings at the Albrecht Dürer Association. His most important and largest print was a steel engraving of Leonardo’s *The Last Supper*—based on the copper engraving by R. Morghen—which he created over six years of work (1836–42); the project was commissioned by the Bibliographisches Institut in Hildburghausen. The print was widely distributed, particularly in England, and was discussed and acclaimed in the literature of the time. In 1847, Wagner produced several series of engravings depicting medieval sculptures from Nuremberg. He resided at S. 1039 (Am Laufer Schlagturm 8) in 1829 and at L. 847 (Königstraße 91) in 1837/50. He stayed in Rome in 1842/43. In 1853, he moved to Stuttgart. At the time of his second marriage in Nuremberg in 1855, his place of residence was listed as Munich.
