He studied sculpture under Jakob Bradl, and from 1864 at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich under Max Widnmann. He became a professor at the Academy in 1884. He created a number of important monuments, including the design for the Kaiser Wilhelm Monument in Nuremberg. However, he was only able to complete the life-size model of the statue; the execution was undertaken by Wilhelm von Ruemann. Lit.: AKL; Thieme-Becker; Masa, Freiplastiken.
