Schobig

designer, painter

born Nürnberg, 06. Apr 1952

died Nürnberg, 02. Mar 2001

∞ 1981 Christiane Stadler, two daughters. Initially trained as an industrial clerk at EWAG. In 1975 he began studying at the University of Applied Sciences for Visual Communication in Nuremberg, graduating with a diploma in 1980. From 1977 to 1979 he worked as an illustrator for Burda Publishing in Offenburg/Munich, subsequently also for other magazine publishers. As a painter, he turned early on to fantastic or magical realism, publishing a small volume of his early works as early as 1981. The three catalogs published in 1994 provide a broader overview of his work. The number of his paintings is manageable, and his works are now widely scattered. Most of them were lithographs produced in editions of up to 150. Around 1988 he also explored furniture design, but the results were only prototypes. As a master of fantastic realism, he is considered one of the most important artists of this style internationally. His exhibitions ranged from the USA to Hong Kong. In 1986, he initiated and co-founded the artist group "Nürnberger Phantasten" (Nuremberg Fantasists). In 1993, he became a member of the "Salon d'Automne Paris." In 1995, he was appointed "Chevalier d'Enghien" and a member of the Akademie International des Arts Contemporains in Belgium. In 1997, he was awarded a doctorate from the Academy of Belgium. He lived and worked in Nuremberg, Neumühlweg 82. Works: For a list, see Annegret Winter: Claus Schobig, vols. 1-3, 1994. Exhibition: 1975/1.
