Son of Georg Dein, compass maker, and Margaretha. According to Doppelmayr, he manufactured tools from hardened steel and was skilled in deep drawing iron sheets. He also crafted artistic table fountains. He is said to have made various inventions and improvements, including an Antlia pneumatica (air pump). In his work, he exchanged ideas with Professor Erhard Weigel in Jena and with the mathematician Johann Christoph Sturm in Altdorf. He was mentioned in the land registers in 1699. He lived near the Jewish cemetery at the end of his life. Deinstrasse in Nuremberg was named after him.
