Zick

Art and ivory turner. Son of Peter the Elder; father of Stephan. He was probably the most important member of the Zick family of art turners. In 1613, he was court turner to the Duke of Weimar; in 1616, turner to the administrator of the Archbishopric of Magdeburg. He traveled throughout Germany. From 1625, he worked in Nuremberg. From 1642 to 1644, he was chamber turner to Emperor Ferdinand III in Vienna, whom he also taught turning. Later, he returned to Nuremberg. Besides his counterfeit boxes, he made a name for himself particularly with his polygonal "corpora," which were 8, 10, 12, or 16-piece interlocking puzzles. His work was frequently imitated after Doppelmayr. In addition to ivory, he also worked with rhinoceros horn and rosewood.
