Son of a schoolmaster of the same name and Maria Magdalena, father of the engraver Johann Elias. Around 1726, he likely came to Augsburg as an apprentice to Johann Elias Ridinger. He founded his own publishing house and produced approximately 300 portrait engravings of German scholars and artists. Panzer recorded 23 engravings of Nuremberg citizens, for five of which he created the designs himself. He also appeared as an illustrator of botanical works. After his death, his son Johann Elias continued the publishing house.
