architectural painter, landscape painter

born Hirschbach/Opf, 18. Jul 1667

died Nürnberg, 04. Mar 1741

1.895 / 5.000* July 18, 1667, Hirschbach/Opf. – † 4, born March 9, 1741, Nuremberg. Brother of Johann Friedrich, goldsmith. He came to Nuremberg as an orphan and was taken into the family of Councilor Ebner as an apprentice. From 1685, he was a student of Johann Franciscus Ermel. After Ermel's death in 1693, he went to Vienna and Munich, followed by a 12-year stay in Italy, which took him to Venice, Florence, Rome, and Naples, among other places. After his return to Nuremberg, he again entered Ebner's service until he was able to establish himself as an independent artist. He initially became friends with Johann Kupezky, whom he took into his home. In a letter dated January 11, 1735, Blendinger complained that Kupezky and his wife, with whom he had become enmity, were distributing defamatory pamphlets about him and posting them on the doors near Kupezky's house. He eventually lived in the Hertelshof on Bonersberg (pre-war numbering: Paniersplatz 9). His portrait, painted by Kupezky, is in the BNM (National Archives of Nuremberg). Panzer recorded his portrait in several versions, as well as two portraits of Nuremberg citizens he painted, as models for portrait engravings.
