Conrad
Heinzelmann

shop foreman

born Detwang bei Rothenburg, um 1400

died Nürnberg, 1454

Master workman of the Upper German Late Gothic who developed the Parler-tradition. He directed the building of St. George´s Church in Nördlingen from 1427 on, supported in realizing this project by Hans Felber and Hans Kun. He is said to have been involved in the building of the nave of St. Jacob´s Church in Rothenburg on the Tauber. In 1439 he designed the hall choir of St. Lorenz-Church in Nuremberg, paraphrasing the choir of the Minster of the Holy Cross in Schwäbisch Gmünd (a work by Heinrich and Peter Parler) whose building had been begun 88 years ago. Despite of all differences the exterior seems to be amazingly familiar, concerning the interior, among many other differences the design of the pillars is basically different. The development of the traceried choir staircase between the lower and the upper storey is a credit of Heinzelmann´s, making him the founder of a special type of Saxonian-Bohemian choirs.
