Antoine van
Dyck

painter

born Antwerpen, 22. Mar 1599

died London, 09. Dec 1641

His painting "Lamentation of Christ", created around 1627/30, was donated by Susanna Dorothea, widow of Johann Christoph Eisen, town clerk in Hersbruck, after the fire of the Egidienkirche in Nuremberg in 1696.

In 1718 the painting was used as an altar leaf for the Baroque high altar of the rebuilt Egidienkirche; at that time it was extended by 7 cm at the sides and also in height and supplemented by Johann Daniel Preißler with a gloriole of clouds with angels.

Since 1959, the painting is located in the southern transept in a stucco frame.
